The Monument

It's finished.

To all those who helped to construct it: Thank you. If any names are missing from this list, tell me, and they will be added.

The principles of the monument are as follows:

Any time a new person comes to Memento Eden, their name will be added to the monument.
The names are in no particular order.
Everyone's name is the same size.
Only first names will be written.
No name, without exception, will be omitted from the list.

If you wish to pay respects to those who are no longer here, leave something at the base of the monument.

[[Now completed, T-O-E's monument is a smooth square stone obelisk, roughly nine feet tall, standing in between City Hall and the park. Carved on it the following inscription, with plenty of room for expansion:

Byakuya left a flower.
Sakura left a bouquet of white carnations.

I will be updating this list as new people come to ME. Comment to leave an offering, and I'll note that, too.]]

Chapter -3000

Shock
He's gone.

My little brother is gone, and it's my fault.
I never should have left home. Why did I think we could do this?

I don't even know where I am anymore.

[T-O-E has been de-aged about 3000 years, to his bleak childhood! He's less than half as big, so the change is physically noticeable even if you aren't familiar with Machine Man physiology.]

Chapter Fifteen

I heard word that before I arrived, there was a time when many of the people of the island became children.

It seems to be happening again.

Contemplative Smoke
If the master of this island has a sence of humor, it's not one I'm much amused by. If I'm going to remember someone, I'd prefer to have some period of grace before remembering their death.

[3% memory spent on T-O-E's two brothers, and their deaths at the hands of the Bleach Beast. total 9% spent, 3% unspent.]

Another affliction seems to have beset the island. I can't cure it, but I'd like to offer something of a service to lessen the difficulties.

I gather that a number of you may be reluctant to sleep in such a state, due to not being as fond or as trusting of your "partner" as would be ideal. To this end, I've designed a simple barrier of sorts that can be installed on any bed in the apartments, with a gap in the middle to permit a hand to allow continued contact, but not large enough to let either sleeping partner do anything unseemly to the other.

If you'd like me to install one anywhere, just ask. I'll require $20 per barrier to cover the cost of materials.

I've taken up a construction project of sorts. If anyone has the interest and the time, I'm looking for volunteers to help with it.

[[For the next couple weeks, there will be a bigass pile of stone in the middle of town, slowly being carved into the shape of a flat stone monolith, roughly 8' tall. Mods, deduct $1000 from T-O-E for building materials and tools, if that sounds reasonable.]]

Chapter Ten

Thought
Too much spare time and too little to do. I've been doing some thinking.

A healthy percentage of the people here are emperors, kings, and other such heroes.
Nobody seems to come from worlds that know about the existance of this place.
Emperors, kings, and other heroes don't have a historical tendency to suddenly vanish without explanation.
Furthermore, a person can arrive and then disappear, and another person can come from later on in the same world's timeline and not remember the other person disappearing.

These four points seem rather telling, but I'm not sure where to take the logic from here. The most appealing explanation is that when we disappear, we are returned to the very instant we left from, with no memory of Memento Eden, and it is as if none of this ever happened. However, the same logic can lead to the somewhat more unsettling notion that we are actually copies of people from other worlds, living amnesiac lives here while our counterparts go on at home as if nothing had happened.

I don't have any particular motive or conclusion from any of this, but it's certainly an interesting train of thought.

...again and again... how many times...

...how long can this hell continue? How many centuries of failure must I endure?

...

Wouldn't it be nice if this place gave memories in some kind of order that made sense? This new memory seems wholly unconnected to the last, and considering its nature, I would have much preferred to remember it with some semblance of context.

I remember... speaking with God.

A festival, this time. It seems familiar to a lot of you. It doesn't to me.

It's things like this that make me think that the masters of this island are mortal, and come from another world just like this rest of us. It explains, at least, why the island recognizes festivals and events native to one world but not another.

So it's true, then. The memories...

...I remember home. The Black Teeth. It was a dark place in which many would find it difficult to live, but the Machine Men build great cities within the mountains. I was born there.

It was a good place, but... I feel like I wanted more.

Chapter Four

Hmm
It looks like the island is doing something interesting again. Fortunately, I weigh enough that the bouncing isn't really a problem, so I hope I'm not breaking any unspoken etiquette rules by talking about something unrelated to it.

I suspect that this is a very natural thing to the people who aready lived here, but I can't help but notice that virtually all of the people here are of the same race. With a couple rare exceptions, such as myself and the man with wings, everyone in the community seems to be a Human. This seems to be normal to the rest of you, but I'm used to a world with all different kinds of people living together. Being dropped into an environment where I'm a vastly outnumbered minority can be a bit jarring.

Am I overlooking something? Are there more non-Humans on the island, or do I just have to get used to it?

Chapter Three

Apparently people have started switching bodies. Or perhaps, switching minds.

...is this a regular occurence here?

Chapter Two

Smoke
It seems that Link was telling the truth. Everyone here really did lose their memories.

At least they come back eventually, but... I won't lie. I don't like it here. I feel like all I can do is distract myself from what I don't know. There's jobs to do and people to talk to, but it all feels too superficial.

Ah, well, no sense complaining about things I can't control. I met a few of the Humans, and found the free lodgings I've been given. The room is fairly spartan; the postings suggested that most people live two to a room, but I have my own. I don't sleep, so I've taken to exploring the town at night. Strange at it is, this land does have a peculiar sort of beauty to it.

Chapter One

  • May. 30th, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Thought
...what is this?

This place bears no sense of familiarity to me. How did I get here?
And my mind... what happened? I don't.... I can't remember anything. It's all gone. Everything.

No, wait. A name. I have a name, and nothing else. I am The One Electronic, and that fact alone is mine. There must be a way to get the rest back. There must!

But still, this is all so strange... this state of mind, this unfamiliar place... everything here feels wrong, from the plants to the light to the very air. Where am I, and where did I come from?

And...

...what happened to me?
